Mt Ada is wonderful historical mansion with great views and stellar service. The views from Mt Ada of Avalon harbor, surrounding hillsides and open ocean are unparalleled. The concierge staff is top notch, always accommodating, friendly and a wealth of information in regard to history of the mansion and Catalina Island. We’ve stayed at Mt Ada a number of times and would like to give a special shout out to concierge’s Pierre and Liz! They always go out of their way to provide us with great service, kindness and nice conversation. We’ve stayed at a number of other places on Catalina and frankly, nothing compares to Mt Ada. If you’re looking for a quiet, uncrowded, secluded place to stay, Mt Ada is the place. You’re not far from the boardwalk and the action of Avalon but when you’re tired of the crowds, you jump in your golf cart and retreat back up the hill to Mt Ada.

Mt. Ada is not your standard Catalina hotel, and that is exactly what makes it great. We stayed in the Bethany Room, and the view was amazing. From high above Avalon, you get this sweeping look over the harbor, the Casino, the boats, and the town below. In the mornings, there was often fog, which gave everything a quiet, almost cinematic feel. By early afternoon, it always lifted, and the whole island opened up in the sun. The place has real history and nostalgia. As the former Wrigley mansion, Mt. Ada feels like old Catalina without being stuffy. It has charm, character, and a fun, relaxed vibe — more like a hidden hilltop clubhouse than a traditional hotel. The perks make a big difference. Breakfast and lunch are included, which is especially nice on an island where costs add up quickly. You also get access to a golf cart, which makes exploring Avalon feel easy and fun. Add in free admission to some local activities, and the stay feels less like just booking a room and more like getting a secret pass to Catalina. We visited at the end of June, so town was definitely crowded. That is worth expecting if you go during summer. But Mt. Ada sits above it all, so you can enjoy the energy of Avalon and then escape back up the hill when you want some peace. The staff were attentive, warm, and very accommodating. They made the stay feel personal without being overbearing. This is a great spot for people who want something different from the usual hotel or resort — especially younger travelers who like places with history, views, personality, and a little off-the-beaten-path magic. Mt. Ada feels like Catalina with a secret key. Five stars.

My friend & I go to Mt Ada 3 to 4 times a year. Our last trip, July 3-7, 2026. We enjoy this old house & our holiday on the island. However, this trip was stressful, poor service & a real disappointment. On check-in, we gave the staff 2 credit cards to split the charges. The next morning we noticed we were each charged over $5000.00. After talking to staff, we ask to speak to management & told, not available. Not until the day of check-out did we receive an invoice straightening all the mess out & finally met with a manager. The service was just ok, if we needed help, we would have to find someone to help us. This visit was disappointing.

Excellent hotel, and the staff is wonderful! Tim and Grant were especially helpful and lovely hosts. I took my mom here for her birthday and was late booking a spot at Descanso Beach Club. Grant provided an amazing recommendation for a boat to two harbors and lounge chairs there. It was ideal for my mom and me. Highly recommend this beautiful and historic hotel.
