Pizza was really good here. We liked it enough to order two. Gochujang brussels had a nice flavor with a bit of spice, but they weren’t too spicy. Shrimp ceviche tasted really fresh. Aldo, our server, was super friendly and kept checking in on us throughout the meal. This is also a great place to come around sunset. The vibe was really nice.

My wife got the Lobster, Shrimp sliders said they were amazing. I got the Steak and frites with burnt Green Beans. Steak was good French fries were ok, but the Green Beans were just plain burnt Green Beans. No flavor. They needed some sort of flavor. We've been here many times before. A lot of the other food is good. This time, not so great for me.

We stopped in to meet some friends just to have drinks at the bar. So I did not get a chance to try the menu. But everything that I saw coming out and being served by the kitchen looked really, really good. Great happy hour menu, lunch and dinner menu. We will definitely be back! If you want to have lunch or dinner, make sure you make a reservation.

As the author of the Grant Colson Thriller Series and SERA Archives Thriller Series, I write action-adventure archaeological thrillers and am always paying attention to locations that have personality and atmosphere, and Monarch Ocean Pub is one of those places I’ve returned to more times than I can count. The design of the restaurant is one of the things I enjoy most. The big wraparound bar gives the interior a lively social energy, and the layout flows naturally out toward the open-air seating and deck areas overlooking the ocean. When the weather is good, I almost always prefer sitting outside where you can take in the view of the Pacific. The food selection is excellent and feels very much like classic Del Mar. It’s a mix of coastal flavors and well-done favorites that make it easy to come back again and again. The staff has always been friendly and attentive, which adds to the relaxed but upscale atmosphere. One of my favorite parts of Monarch is simply the people watching. Between the ocean views, the energy of Del Mar Plaza, and the steady flow of locals and visitors, it’s the kind of place where you can easily imagine scenes unfolding. As a writer, I can absolutely picture characters from one of my romance or thriller novels sitting here at the bar or out on the deck while the sun drops over the water. Great food, great atmosphere, and one of the best places in Del Mar to relax for a while.
