Tri-City Student Wins $10,000 Scholarship for Duct Tape Dress

Sophie Chai, a recent graduate from James Logan High School in neighboring Union City, has won first place in Duck Brand's 2026 Stuck at Prom scholarship competition. Chai was awarded a $10,000 college scholarship after designing and constructing an intricate prom gown styled after a multi-tiered cake.

The annual competition challenges students across North America to create wearable formalwear crafted entirely out of duck tape and crafting tape. Chai spent weeks layering patterns, shaping textures, and assembling detailed pastel decorations before gathering public support during the contest's community voting stage.

Her winning creation explored themes of artistic self-expression and personal growth. Chai noted that the competition gave her an engaging way to showcase her creative design talents while securing meaningful financial support for her upcoming college studies.
