Spare the Air Alert Issued as Pleasanton Temperatures Approach 100
Hot conditions and light breezes prompted regional air regulators to declare a smog advisory across the Tri-Valley.
Regional air regulators issued a Spare the Air alert for Pleasanton and surrounding Tri-Valley communities as late summer heat pushed afternoon temperatures toward the triple digits. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District noted that high heat combined with light surface winds and delayed afternoon bay breezes caused ground-level ozone concentrations to climb rapidly.
The alert designated local air quality as unhealthy for sensitive individuals, including young children, seniors, and residents living with respiratory or heart conditions. Health officials suggested scheduling strenuous outdoor activities during the early morning hours when pollution levels remain relatively low.
Community members were also asked to help curb smog formation by cutting back on unnecessary vehicle trips, carpooling or using public transit, and waiting until after dusk to refuel motorized equipment.
