SOS Meals on Wheels Delivers Milestone 10 Millionth Meal
Alameda County homebound seniors received a special meal as SOS Meals on Wheels marked 60 years of local service and ten million deliveries.

SOS Meals on Wheels reached an extraordinary milestone this week, serving its 10 millionth meal to homebound seniors across Alameda County. To celebrate the occasion, local delivery routes featured a celebratory menu of pollo guisado stew served alongside rice, cranberry juice, and dessert. Alameda County Supervisor Elisa Marquez joined volunteers on route to help deliver the commemorative meals directly to residents.
The nonprofit, which is now marking 60 years in operation, relies heavily on community volunteers to keep its operations running smoothly. In Tri-City neighborhoods like Newark, Fremont, and Union City, volunteers handle almost all meal drop-offs. The organization estimates that donated time covers over $900,000 worth of staffing value each year, helping the program stretch its budget as food expenses continue to climb.
Beyond delivering warm food, drivers conduct essential daily wellness checks for elderly residents who might otherwise live in isolation. As older adults become the fastest growing demographic in the county, organizers noted that these consistent visits help seniors remain safely and independently in their own homes.
