The Pleasanton City Council voted unanimously to approve an agreement with the Zone 7 Water Agency to push forward the Joint Groundwater Supply Project into design, environmental review, and construction.

Under the terms of the agreement, Zone 7 will own and maintain the new facilities through 2055, while Pleasanton preserves its annual right to 3,500 acre-feet of groundwater. Previous city wells were taken offline in 2022 after PFAS chemicals were discovered, requiring the city to purchase all of its drinking water from Zone 7 at higher wholesale rates.

The project plans to build two replacement wells at Hansen Park and Tennis Park, with operations anticipated to start by late 2029. Local officials note the agreement will help rebuild drinking water independence and stabilize municipal water expenses over the long term.
