Palo Alto School District Adds Automated Sushi Makers to Kitchens
Palo Alto Unified School District used state grant funding to purchase two automated sushi rolling machines to serve popular cafeteria meals.
Palo Alto Unified School District has added commercial sushi-making equipment to its central food service facilities, responding to high student demand across district cafeterias. Purchasing records indicate the district acquired two automated sushi machines totaling $56,599 across two transactions.
District representatives explained that sushi emerged as the second most requested entree in student surveys, trailing only pizza. After kitchen staff discovered that preparing rolls by hand was too labor-intensive to meet demand across campuses, the district sought equipment to prepare uniform rolls efficiently.
The purchases were paid for using dedicated kitchen infrastructure grant funds from the California Department of Education rather than general education funds. The machines now support weekly sushi specialty offerings at local campuses, featuring vegetable rolls and California rolls made with surimi.
