Ohlone College Scraps Newark Student Housing Project as Costs Climb
Ohlone College has abandoned plans to build affordable student housing at its Newark campus due to surging construction expenses and shifting enrollment.

Ohlone College administrators have canceled plans to build an affordable student housing complex at the Newark Center campus, citing sharp spikes in construction costs and changing enrollment dynamics. The project had been envisioned to offer lower-cost units for students navigating the Tri-City area's competitive rental market.
College officials determined that high building material costs, tariff pressures, and declining international student numbers made the projected monthly rents unaffordable for the very students the facility was designed to help. Without sustainable financial projections, trustees concluded that continuing the development would place undue financial risk on the college.
The community college district will instead evaluate alternative options to support housing insecure students, including transit subsidies, emergency basic needs grants, and countywide housing assistance partnerships.
