Mission San Jose High Student's Original Play Wins Honors at Theater Festival
A student-written and directed play from Mission San Jose High School took top awards at a major Northern California drama festival.
Students from the Universal Performers drama club at Mission San Jose High School earned multiple honors at the annual LENAEA High School Theatre Festival in Sacramento for their production of 'The Removal.' The one-act dystopian drama was conceived, written, and produced entirely by local students.
Faced with a lack of dedicated theater facilities and budget constraints for play licensing fees, incoming senior Alisha Arora penned the original script herself. The cast and crew improvised by holding after-school rehearsals in empty classrooms and on outdoor campus benches.
The award-winning play centers on a civic and political theme where participants in a fictional society are forced to debate and vote on removing individuals from their community.
