Caltrans Schedules 14-Hour Full Closure of Niles Canyon Road
State Route 84 will close overnight on September 26 for bridge girder installation in Sunol.
Caltrans has announced a planned overnight closure of State Route 84 through Niles Canyon to advance bridge replacement work. The roadway will shut down completely in both directions at the Arroyo de la Laguna Bridge near Sunol starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, through 8 a.m. on Sunday, September 27.
During the 14-hour closure, construction crews will use a large crane to hoist and place six precast concrete girders that will serve as the structural framework for the new bridge deck. Transportation officials noted that a full roadway closure is required to give crane operators and ground crews a safe work area.
Motorists traveling between Fremont, Sunol, Pleasanton, and Livermore will be rerouted onto detours using Foothill Road, Castlewood Drive, and Interstate 680. Drivers should anticipate travel delays and check regional condition reports before heading out.
