Cal Fire Cancels Prescribed Angel Island Burns Following Smoke Impacts

State fire officials called off remaining burns on Angel Island after shifting winds carried smoke into Oakland and triggered air alerts.

State and regional fire agencies have called off the remaining days of a planned controlled burn on Angel Island after smoke drifted across the bay into Oakland and neighboring East Bay communities. The operation, conducted jointly by Cal Fire, California State Parks, and the Marin County Fire Department, aimed to clear hazardous brush and restore native plants.

Crews successfully completed burning across 62 acres on Tuesday, reducing more than half the accumulated fuel in the target area. However, stagnant atmospheric conditions trapped the resulting smoke close to sea level, pushing localized air quality measurements into unhealthy territory and prompting regulators to declare consecutive Spare the Air alerts.

Fire officials explained that while the temporary smoke was disruptive, controlled burns remain an essential tool to prevent far larger and more destructive wildfires later in the season. Ground crews will remain on site to extinguish remaining hot spots rather than lighting new fires.
