Burglary Suspect Fatally Shot Following Altercation in Fremont Residence

A Friday afternoon home invasion in Fremont turned fatal after an apartment occupant wrestled a weapon away from an armed intruder. Police responded shortly after 12:15 p.m. to reports of gunfire at a residential building on San Pedro Drive in the Cabrillo neighborhood near Interstate 880.

Investigators determined that two armed teenagers forced their way into the residence and assaulted the occupants inside. During a physical struggle, one of the residents managed to gain control of a suspect's firearm and discharged it, striking one of the teenage intruders. First responders provided emergency aid at the scene, but the wounded teen later died from his injuries at a nearby trauma hospital.

A second teenage suspect fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by responding officers. He was booked into the Juvenile Justice Center on suspicion of residential burglary and felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm. The residents suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the initial struggle.
