How Fremont Became Fremont: The Five Communities Behind the City

Fremont may feel like one large city today, but it actually began as five separate communities with their own identities and histories.

In 1956, the communities of Centerville, Niles, Irvington, Mission San Jose, and Warm Springs joined together to officially form the City of Fremont.

That history still shapes the city today. Each neighborhood has kept some of its original character, from historic buildings and business districts to parks, street names, and community traditions.

Centerville

Centerville developed as an important commercial and transportation hub in the area. Its location along early roads and rail routes helped it become a center for local businesses and agriculture.

Today, the Centerville district still reflects that history through its older commercial areas and community landmarks.

Niles

Niles is one of Fremont’s most recognizable historic neighborhoods.

In the early 1900s, the area became connected to the growing motion-picture industry. The Essanay Film Manufacturing Company operated a studio in Niles, and silent-film star Charlie Chaplin worked there for a short period.

The neighborhood’s historic downtown, railroad history, and preserved buildings continue to give Niles a distinctive small-town feel.

Irvington

Irvington grew around agriculture, local businesses, schools, and transportation routes.

The neighborhood became an important community center long before Fremont was incorporated and remains one of the city’s major residential and commercial areas today.

Mission San Jose

Mission San Jose takes its name from Mission San José, founded in 1797.

The mission became one of the most important early settlements in the region and remains a major Fremont historic landmark. The neighborhood around it developed over generations and is now known for its historic sites, schools, and proximity to the hills.

Warm Springs

Warm Springs developed around the natural warm springs found in the area and was once known as a destination for visitors seeking the springs and nearby resorts.

Over time, the neighborhood evolved from a more rural and agricultural community into one of Fremont’s major technology and employment centers.

Today, Warm Springs is home to large employers, new housing, BART service, and a growing business district—but its name still reflects the area’s much older history.

A City Built From Five Communities

When Fremont was incorporated in 1956, these five communities became one city rather than losing their individual identities.

That is part of what makes Fremont unusual. Neighborhoods like Niles, Mission San Jose, Centerville, Irvington, and Warm Springs still feel noticeably different from one another, even though they have been part of the same city for seven decades.

Fremont’s history is not simply the story of one downtown expanding outward. It is the story of five communities growing together into the city we know today.
