Citrus Heights Teens Invited to Help Shape Their City

Citrus Heights is looking for local students to take a more active role in the community through its new Youth Advisory Commission.

The 13-member commission is open to students in grades 8 through 12 who live in Citrus Heights and is designed to give young residents a direct voice in conversations happening at City Hall. Applications for the inaugural 2026–27 term are due September 25.

What the Youth Advisory Commission Will Do

Members will work with city leaders on issues that affect young people and the broader community.

The commission is expected to:

  • advise the City Council and staff on youth-related programs and policies
  • suggest ways to increase youth involvement in the community
  • participate in local projects and events
  • review programs or proposed ordinances that affect young residents
  • develop youth-led ideas and initiatives
  • present an annual report on the commission’s work

The goal is to create a stronger connection between local government and the teenagers who live in Citrus Heights.

A Chance to Learn How Local Government Works

Commissioners will serve one-year terms from September through May, with the possibility of being appointed for one additional consecutive year.

Meetings will generally take place once a month at Citrus Heights City Hall, and members may also attend City Council meetings throughout the year.

For students interested in leadership, public service, community projects, or simply having more say in what happens around them, the commission offers a chance to see firsthand how local decisions are made.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must:

  • live in Citrus Heights
  • be enrolled in grades 8–12
  • be able to attend monthly meetings from September through May

The city also requests a signed recommendation letter from a teacher, counselor, advisor, or coach.

Application Deadline Is September 25

Applications for the first Youth Advisory Commission term are due September 25, 2026.

The commission gives local teenagers an opportunity to do more than simply learn about government—they can help influence programs and ideas intended for people their own age.
